  • The physico-chemical and biological properties of some plant secondary metabolites
  • Methods of secondary metabolite extraction
  • Methods of separating, detecting and identifying volatile organic compounds
  • The applications and uses of chemical analyses
  • The critical use of relevant scientific literature

Knowledge of basic chemistry and basic computing skills.

An introduction to plant secondary metabolites, with emphasis on essential oils (terpenes and terpenoids). Secondary metabolite extraction methods. Organoleptic examination of the biodiversity of plant aroma. Isolation of essential oil by hydro-distillation (practical). Methods for the separation and identification of essential oil components (gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry). Analysis of chromatograms and mass spectrograms using the Xcalibur software package. Uses and applications of chemical analyses. The critical use of Search for relevant scientific literature

Continual assessment based on performance in carrying out tasks, participation, and interaction in group and autonomous course learning activities. Assessment of an Oral Presentation (to invited auditorium with peer discussion) based on the practical work and tasks carried out during the course.Students will be assessed on their comprehension of:
